Satin dresses

Q I have a couple of satin dresses in mind for my company's annual dinner and dance. But I'm concerned that they might look too school prom. What should I do?

A There is shine, and there is looking like a gift wrapper. Obviously you want to steer away from the latter. So here's what to note.

  • It's always better to pick a roomier style, like a babydoll dress, because skin-tight satin - even on a size 2 - isn't flattering.

  • If you're going for brighter, jewel-tone dresses, choose more streamlined, basic styles like sheaths or shifts. It's all about balance.

  • Ditto accessories. Keep the shine on the dress and go easy on the bling. Better to wear a huge cocktail ring than pile on loads of delicate trinkets. Think modern, glamorous woman, not prom princess.
