Find new uses for old stuff
Sell
Sites such as eBay (www.ebay.com.sg) and Yahoo Auctions (sg.auctions.yahoo.com) let you list your item for a specified period, at the end of which you sell it to the highest bidder.
You can also advertise your stuff on online classifieds such as ST701 (shops.st701.com).
For those who are not comfortable with the Internet, there is Cash Converters. Just bring your stuff to one of its outlets (check www.cashconverters-asia.com). It offers cash for people's unwanted stuff which it then sells in its shops. But there are some things it does not take, such as clothes and books.
Then there's the neighbourhood karung guni man. If not, try www.ragnbone.com.sg which offers a free collection service and pays in cash for the stuff the karung guni man takes.
If you have loads to sell, then rent a stall at a flea market. Team up with friends to split the cost. Regular flea markets include the weekend one at China Square Central (see www. chinasquarecentral.com/happenings.php) and Flea & Easy, Zouk's quarterly bazaar (visit www.zoukclub.com and click on FAQ, under Enquiries, for details).
Swop
Try exchanging your things for something you want. Organise a swop party with friends who also have goodies they want to get rid of. You can also check out what others are offering for trade at www.youswop.com.
Give away
The Salvation Army has donation bins where you can drop off used but functional items. The locations can be downloaded from www1.salvationarmy.org
You can also give away your stuff to friends, or try the Singapore Freecycle Network (groups.yahoo.com/group/ SgFreecycle/), which aims to connect people who are discarding things with people who are seeking the same items. You can trawl the postings to see if anyone is looking for your unwanted stuff, or post a message offering your items to whoever will take them.
Recycle
Check the map on the National Environment Agency website for the location of the nearest recycling bin at www.nea.gov.sg/cms/ rcd/locations/map.html
Those who live in private housing estates that have a recycling programme can just dump recyclables in the bags provided and leave them outside their homes on the collection dates.
Also check out www.recycling-bank.com. This organisation picks up all items for recycling. In return, you get points which can be accumulated and redeemed for shopping vouchers.
