11 June 2007 - Maegan and her dad (part 2)

I remember many months back blogging about the similarities between Maegan and her daddy.

Some months later, I'm glad to report that the good similarities remain, such as being spunky, displaying independence and lots of curiosity, but no signs of being a Liverpool fan, or Playstation enthusiast have shown up. Phew!

Maegan and her dad had a more interesting episode recently. My husband was hospitalized for six days for an immense "worst headache of his life", which made him immobile for 3 days, followed by 2 blood tests, 1 MRI scan, X-rays, and appointments with specialists to determine what the cause was.

The great news was that no abnormal findings came up, the bad news was we never knew where that whammy of a headache came from.

In between his rather long stay at the hospital, we were advised to not bring Maegan down for visits as the nurses were concerned for her young immune system.

So, all throughout the hospital stay, Maegan only saw her daddy twice, and it all took place in the foodcourt where he had to come down, for a chance to hold her, and play with her. Mind you, this was after he was feeling more lucid on the 4th day.

But the one question he had on his mind constantly during the hospital stay was: "Does Maegan miss me, does she know her daddy is in hospital?"

Honestly, I didn't know how to answer his question. My best reply was this: "Of course she misses you, she just doesn't understand the concept of you being away in hospital."

In truth, it was kind of like a white lie, because I could never know if she did know that her father, who couldn't carry her due to a drip plugged into his hand, was not entirely well, and we had to place her at her grandparents' home for 2 nights because I was juggling three trips to the hospital each day, in between making sure Maegan was doing well at her grandparents'. In those six days, she saw her daddy for 30 minutes max, and I saw her for spurts of 30-40 mins spread over the six days. I think she must have known something was up.

But she kept up with us, and made sure she didn't add to our worries. Her "cool" attitude and positive-ness granted me the peace to move on to do what I needed to do during those six days - to make sure I was there for every important specialist appointment my husband had, and to ensure he was not damp and down when they were recommending the different investigations to pursue, with no firm answers in sight.

When he was discharged from hospital last week, he heeded the advice of many well-meaning friends and relatives to "take it easy". Less late nights, less stress from work (and less of watching early morning soccer), less taxing the body and more of resting, and eating well.

I'm happy to see that he's on his way to doing so, because the one thing that struck him during his stay in hospital was wanting to be healthy enough so that he could spend good, quality time with Maegan.

As a result, he has earned such a pride of place in her life because she has started verbalizing "Dar-dar" for everything else related to him - and me!

It's official, she said Daddy before Mummy!
