I was slogging away at my desk in the midst of a busy week when I rang home to ask how Maegan was doing. It was my usual phonecall in the middle of the day, just to distract myself for a while, and to find out what my little princess was up to.
So when my mum picked up the phone, she asked if I wanted to chat with Maegan.
I said sure, and when the phone was passed to her, I said: "Hi Maegan, it's mummy. What are you doing? Are you having lunch, are you playing with your toys?"
I normally don't stop talking because Maegan never usually replies. She stays silent on the phone, almost content to listen to my jabbering.
Maegan made mum's heart melt when she
called her for the first time!
I was going on and on until I suddenly heard her say: "Mi-mi." I was shocked, stunned and silenced. I could not believe she had just called me over the phone, and I was so euphoric about the acknowledgement that I suddenly stopped talking.
My mum had heard Maegan and excitedly yelled out in the background: "Wah, she just called you over the phone." It was a feat, a success moment for the proud mum in me, and my heart was melting as I hung onto the receiver.
The other day, I received news that my girlfriend had resigned from her job, and sad as she was to have walked away from a budding career, she said it was the best decision she had made, because it wasn?t just for herself, but also for her two children, and her husband. The family will finally be reunited in Hong Kong where her husband is based.
She mentioned one thing, that it's the "golden moments" of her children that count, and she's willing to invest into their lives now, not later or "see-how".
I was so proud of her, because what she said resonated with me because I had experienced a golden moment with Maegan. Just two words from her over the phone gave me a burst of energy to carry on with the work-day, and each time I wanted to drag my feet over a task, I recalled her sweet voice and it seriously uplifted me.
I'm sure there are more golden moments to come, I?m sure Maegan has her little store of surprises for her parents, and I'm sure as it comes that she'll be a great toddler, tween and teen. And in between those growing years, I don't want to miss out on her golden moments, because they are the milestones I can count on, as a learning parent.
