Five different get-ups
VERSATILE
Hong Kong casualwear label Bossini is known for its affordable clothing. It recently added a youth line called Yb to its stable of kids', men's and women's lines.

Yb, which features spunkier designs in sizes smaller than its adult lines, will be launched in Bossini stores at Bugis Junction, IMM, Jurong Point, Lucky Plaza, Parkway Parade, Ngee Ann City, Tampines Mall and VivoCity by the end of this month. A tee costs about $20 while a pair pants costs about $50.

The outfit: Striped polo tee, $26; pants, $46; striped jacket, $69

Total: $141

The verdict

Stylist: This look is good for dinner. It is rather versatile and has an 'old navy' feel to it. He can go without the jacket to a tuition class and throw it back on for a dinner or family function. The sewn-on emblems inject a playful element so he won't look too mature even with the jacket on.

Shawn: I think I look smart in this, but this look might be a little too old for me. It looks like something that a 20-year-old would wear.

Mum: I like this look because it makes Shawn look smarter. The stripes on the jacket help to keep it more kiddy so he doesn't look too old even though it's a more formal look. Overall, it's not bad.

LOUD

British high-street label Topman stocks trendy casualwear, meaning anything from your basic tees to jeans of different cuts.

Its rock-influenced designs mean lots of outrageous and edgy graphics in attention-grabbing colours. Definitely not for the conservative. A tee costs about $40 to $50 while a pair of jeans costs about $100.

The outfit: Printed tee, $43; basic cotton tee (worn underneath), $19; denim slim-fit jeans, $103; sling bag, $73

Total: $238

The verdict

Stylist: This outfit is good for a casual day out. It's comfortable yet edgy as the loud prints grab your attention. The splashes of bright colours jazz up the black and white prints.

Shawn: I like this because it's really comfortable. The look is very playful as well so if I go to a party in this, I might enjoy myself more because the outfit puts me in the mood. But because I usually wear baggier clothes, I find the sleeves of the tee a little too short. They might have gone overboard with the prints, too.

Mum: I think he looks good in this. He's usually dressed simply but he's young, so I think he needs to liven up his dressing. This look does just that. But I don't know if he'd be used to the loud prints.

LAIDBACK

Spanish fashion label Pull And Bear set up shop here in 2006. Youths throng this store for its trendy and laidback casual pieces such as printed tees, bermudas, leather jackets and accessories such as shoes, belts and caps for both men and women. A tee here costs about $30 while a pair of pants goes for about $100.

The outfit: Black cotton cardigan, $99.90; canvas shoes, $69.90; printed tee, $29.90; checkered bermudas, $99.90

Total: $299.60

The verdict

Stylist: This look can be good for different occasions, whether it's for a casual get together with friends or for a tuition class. The bermudas can be swopped with a pair of jeans to smarten up the look and he'd be good to go for dinner. Personally, though, I may wear a shirt under the cardigan instead because a collar would frame the neck region better.

Shawn: I like this look. It's very comfortable and looks pretty cool and funky - my kind of thing. I might wear the top with slim-cut pants instead as the bermudas might be too baggy.

Mum: I like how Jerome paired the two tops with bermudas instead of the usual jeans or pants. It gives an unexpected twist to the look. Actually my husband has a cardigan that looks something like this but I've always thought it was very 'ah pek' (Hokkien for old man). But on Shawn it actually looks very trendy and young. I think the detailing on the shoulders of the cardigan helps as well. There's nothing I don't like about this outfit.

SPORTY

If you're looking for a one-stop shop for the whole family, Fox is probably it. Besides the quintessential men's and women's lines, the Israeli casualwear label also has two lines for the young ones: Fox Kids and Fox Baby.

A dressy shirt from Fox Men goes for about $56 while a simple tee can be had for under $30.

The outfit: Striped V-neck tee, $29; black long-sleeved tee (worn underneath), $29; cap, $13; black denim jeans, $79

Total: $150

The verdict

Stylist: This outfit is fun and can be worn to practically any social function. It's very casual but the long-sleeved tee underneath the grey top makes it slightly formal. The horizontal stripes on the tee also help make Shawn's body look bigger and wider. Overall, I think this outfit works well on him as it makes him look more proportionate.

Shawn: This outfit is sporty, which is a plus. I like how these two tops are worn together to create the layering effect. Actually, I'd wear this at home as well.

Mum: It's a very youthful look that helps Shawn look trendy and sporty at the same time. I like the layering and the bright green stripes against the grey tee - they make the outfit more fun and interesting.

ADVENTUROUS

Fat Face is a casual British apparel line which started in 1988 but was brought to Singapore only last September. Forget trendy items like skinny jeans and leggings. The brand's outdoors-centric philosophy translates into comfortable, high-quality clothes that allow you to rough it out without worrying about ripping your outfits. Think Timberland, but with a younger edge. Fashion here doesn't come cheap though - a jacket costs about $150 while a polo tee is about $100.

The outfit: Pullover sweater, $119.90; cotton tee, $76.90; beaded choker, $39.90; denim jeans, $166.90; hat, $53.90; shoes, $89.90

Total: $547.40

The verdict

Stylist: This is what a Japanese surfer boy would wear before he gets into his surfing gear. This is a beach-inspired outfit. He should wear this when he goes for a holiday, say, to Bali or Phuket. The sweater is good for keeping warm but when it gets too hot, he can always take it off and the rest of the get-up is still casual and interesting rather than ethnic-looking.

Shawn: Although it might not seem so, the sweater is really comfortable. It's warm but in a cosy way. The hat might seem a little goofy but I guess it's okay, depending on how it's worn. There's a vintage feel to this look.

Mum: This makes Shawn looks like he's away from Singapore. It's actually very resort-style, relaxed and casual. I would dress him in something along these lines if we were to take a trip, but this is probably not something he would wear in Singapore.
