THERE are a number of difficult situations some children might find themselves in which I feel deserve attention.
Think of what a child would feel like if she were told that she had been adopted. It would be a great blow to hear the news from someone other than her parents.
How would children of single parents feel should they be asked to draw a family portrait in class?
A missing parent might draw questions, and seeing that classmates have mothers and fathers might have an adverse psychological impact on these children.
Also, what is the impact of divorce on children? Sometimes, kids feel that they are the cause of a divorce.
I have also seen children who feel hatred for a parent after a divorce, which is mostly due to parents talking negatively about each other.
Some miss the parent they are not living with, and depression can result. Children need help to adjust to such circumstances. Parents and children should undergo counselling.
Most importantly, parents should let their children know that they are not the reason behind a tough family situation.
