Fancy having the Kamasutra on your feet?
That's the name of the creation that won Denis Li the top prize in the Adidas shoe design competition, held at Bugis Junction two weeks ago.
The challenge was to design a shoe "in your own style", and his winning submission featured the use of kamasutra motifs.
Mr Li, a student at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, also won the Roxy surfboard design competition held at Raffles City last week. Participants had to interpret the Roxy mantra of being "Fun and alive, daring and confident and naturally beautiful", while at the same time relating it to being a Singapore girl.
Mr Li's design had a startling red background featuring the front profile of a girl, accompanied by elaborate pink and purple patterns splashed across the surfboard.
He walked away with vouchers worth up to $1,000 for his efforts.
Lim Wei Yi from Singapore Polytechnic won the OP T-shirt design competition at Junction 8 with a subtle but intricate design. He used a simple white T-shirt as the base colour, with strong black and lavender abstract patterns.
In the bYSI design competition, Vonny Imelda from Raffles Design Institute took first prize with a slightly androgynous officewear creation.
Against the use of a no-nonsense white collared shirt and corseted skirt, the outfit had feminine floral details on accessories such as a thick waist belt and the lapels of a cropped vest.
The two competitions are part of the CapitaLand Retail Creme Awards 2007, which recognises the best student designers for brands ranging from Adidas to SK Jewellery.
The competition was judged by representatives from each brand, and participants' designs were judged on creativity, practicality and relevance.
Other participating brands include surfwear brands Roxy and OP, bYSI, Charles & Keith, Citigems and Perlini's Silver.
Winning designs for Perlini's Silver will also be custom-made into pendants by the jewellery retailer, and presented to the winners of its competition.
