Everyone knows about the harm the sun can do to the skin, but it is worth another reminder.
Sunscreen is still the best form of protection against skin cancer, ageing skin and maintaining fairer skin tone.
But at a recent Garnier press conference, experts reported that only 15 per cent of Singaporean women use sunscreen and only 8 per cent use it daily, compared to 42 per cent in China and 48 per cent in Taiwan.
Two types of UV rays are particularly harmful to skin.
UVA is responsible for aging skin and dermatological allergies while UVB rays causes sunburns and skin cancer.
Other side-effects caused by over-exposure to the sun are dark spots, wrinkles, and dry, thicker skin that has less elasticity.
And it is not only older women who are prone to these conditions - women as young as 25 can suffer from them too.
Surveys show that women from age 18 to 25 make up the biggest percentage of skin cancer patients.
Our environment also plays a big part in determining our health, says Dr Michael Kimlin, a researcher who studies the impact of climate change and its impact on human health.
As Asia is one of the areas in the world where there is an abundance of UVA rays, research has shown that Asian women are 5.17 times more exposed to UVA rays than European women.
This makes women in Singapore more prone to suffering from the damaging effects of the sun and a good suncare regime is necessary.
