The New Paper
Who's flattest of them all?

GET this, guys. It's official. Big busts are out. Flat is in.

According to MediaCorp's vice-president of branding and promotions, Mr Paul Chan, it is now trendy to be less buxomy.

Right. And guess what a lot of people are discussing on Stomp?

Flat chests.

One netizen recently posted this question on the forum: Which female artiste in MediaCorp has the flattest front?

Some said Jeanette Aw. Others named Joanne Peh and Patricia Mok.

Netizens who responded seemed to agree that Jeanette and Joanne - two of the much touted "Seven Princesses" - are the flattest of them all.

One of them, everton_tk23, wrote that "Jeanette and Joanne can fight lar".

Omegacreations joked that "the truth is these two ladies are wearing tissue inside" to boost their assets, while Beng_003 claimed that Joanne would fake her small cleavage by "squeezing her arms".

But, Joanne told The New Paper over the phone yesterday that "I don't really want to look too voluptuous".

If she wanted that, she would have got breast implants, she added.

The 24-year-old actress prefers an "athletic frame", which she said she maintains through yoga, golf and jogging.

Although she admitted to wearing push-up bras or silicon stick-ons when the occasion calls for them, she said she does not feel comfortable wearing revealing or low-cut outfits.

She also tries "as much as possible not to wear a bikini on TV".

"I'm not comfortable if people stare too much. If you're flat, nobody wants to stare, so that's a good thing," she added in jest.

Unlike Hollywood star Jennifer Love Hewitt, who lashed out against websites that ridiculed her bikini photos which revealed cellulite, Joanne coolly said she is "immune" to the public scrutiny that comes with her celebrity status.

"If people say good things (about you), it's not healthy to think, 'I'm really good'. If they say bad things, you get demoralised.

"These are unnecessary emotional upheavals you go through. Just concentrate on the work and do a good job, be professional."

Meanwhile, Jeanette, 28, told Shin Min Daily News that she does nothing special to enhance her assets - other than wearing push-up bras.

On the accusations of her "wearing tissue", she asked for "these people (netizens) to prove it".

"I'm not tall, but my body is quite proportionate. What I want to present is (the image of) a healthy, lively Jeanette Aw."

MAKES FUN OF HERSELF

As for Patricia, 36, she admitted to Shin Min Daily News that her chest is a mere "30A" and she wears the smallest bra size available.

But she added that it is precisely her "big mouth, flat chest" that got her noticed in showbiz in the first place, and she would often make jokes about her own figure.

Local singer Stefanie Sun, who is not a MediaCorp artiste but is well known for her skinny frame, was also named in the Stomp discussion.

DiamondLover thinks that she "beats everyone" because "she is really like a stick! Not just flat but extremely skinny too!".

In defence of the flat-chested stars, MediaCorp's Mr Chan cited the example of Korean actress Yoon Eun Hye, who flattened her chest for a cross-dressing role in the hugely popular drama Coffee Prince, and won fans who liked her tomboyish look.

"The era of Ann Poh is over," he said. "Flat chests are in."

Perhaps.

But big or small, the subject doesn't fail to get the eyeballs.

The Stomp discussion thread attracted more than 1,500 views and 50 comments.
