The New Paper
Second shot at fame

THEY missed out the first time around, but this year, they have a strong chance of being named The New Paper New Face 2007.

Amy Lim and Eileen Yap tried out for The New Paper New Face in previous years, but didn't get into the Top 20.

Maturity obviously agrees with them because now they have the qualities we are looking for - great smile, stunning body, a face you won't forget.

They were among the 20 young women hunted down on Wednesday night by the New Face team, made up of five of last year's contestants - winner Nargis Musawwir, second runner-up Peggy Chang, Emileen Lim, Velda Tan and Alessia Zuliani.

The five were at Clarke Quay to find the next batch of contestants. Eileen, 21, first tried in 2002.

"I got into the top 50," she revealed.

Still, she was surprised when the girls approached her at Clinic.

"It was only my second time at the club. But the girls (who approached me) were friendly, so I thought I would give it another shot."

Eileen has already found a fan in 2006 finalist Alessia.

It was Alessia who spotted Eileen. "She is very sweet, with a genuine smile,"said Alessia.

"She looked very pretty that night."

Amy, 19, the other second-timer, was going into Ministry Of Sound when she was approached by Peggy.

Amy had tried for New Face in 2004.

"I got to the audition stage, and then nothing," she said.

"I think dressing played a big part. And my hair was very short then."

But she is confident this time.

When asked of her chances, she said: "I think I can lah."

FRESH LOOK

The team was impressed by the potential they found. Alessia said: "The girls we saw were very different and very fresh. And that's good."

Like Calyn Huang, 19, who was spotted walking past Fashion Bar.

The 19-year-old is a veteran of getting approached. She said: "I was approached by some modelling agencies but I ignored those.

"The New Paper New Face contest is a recognised one and you won't con me of my money."

Last year's New Faces also spent the night laughing, dancing and reminiscing. Velda said: "The highlight for me was reliving last year's New Face experience."

Alessia wants more women to enjoy the fun. "Just give it a try, you never know what will happen," she said.

Velda promised the newcomers: "You won't regret it."

Peggy - who got to the top five in this year's Miss Singapore Universe - added: "This contest is bound to open doors for you."

So far, more than 500 women have submitted their entries, all wanting a chance to be named The New Paper New Face 2007, presented by Subaru MotorImage.
