Couples rush for Aug 8 date

IPOH: Marriage registration at the Ipoh Chinese Chin Woo Athletic Association is fully booked from now till Aug 8, forcing it to turn couples away.

Association deputy president Datuk Ooi Foh Sing said they had to put up notices at the premises informing couples that marriage registration for Aug 8 had been closed.

"Despite that, we are still inundated with calls from couples wanting to register their marriages on that day.

"Some even came to see me to appeal to be allowed to register their marriage on that day," said Ooi yesterday.

Ooi, who is also the marriage registrar at the association, said the marriages of 63 couples would be solemnised on Aug 8.

This, he noted, was the highest number of marriage registrations recorded by the association in its 14 years of registering marriages.

"One of the couples had even booked to get married in January before putting in the forms on July 1," he added.

Asked why couples were attracted to Aug 8, Ooi explained that it had a nice rhyme to it.

"Besides, it is also auspicious for a successful union," he added.

Ooi also said that marriage registration for this year's Mooncake Festival, which falls on Sept 14, has started.
