Legends of the fall

Pump up the volume was the message this time last year, when designers in Paris, Milan, New York and London showcased their fall and winter looks. But now, the voluminous silhouettes featured back then are, well, so last season. This autumn, there's a new shape to cling to.

And menfolk are bound to be pleased.

While women loved last September's body-skimming silhouettes for their easy wear and comfort, curve-loving guys did not.

From trapeze coats to pillowy sleeves, they were clothes that were kinder to less-than-perfect figures and were actually comfortable - but to the male of the species, they were unsexy, hiding too much of the female form.

This fall/winter collection will make boyfriends happy.

Think fitted jackets over high-waisted slim pencil-skirts, belted silhouettes and body-conscious dresses.

When volume shows up, it's confined to sleeve details or in billowing A-line coats that are still cinched in the waist.

Polish is key - a state of refinement that shows up not only in the clothes, but in make-up trends: sultry red lips, dramatically lined eyes and flawless porcelain skin.

It's vamp without being trampy, classy without being prudish.

And it all says one thing. This fall, it's time to be a woman.
