Hollywood glamour: Old and new

GRETA GARBO, 1905-1990

Swedish-born beauty Greta Garbo is regarded as one of the greatest and most inscrutable movie stars.

Her acting and screen presence were captivating, as were the look and emotions that emanated from her eyes. She was also once voted the most beautiful woman who ever lived by the Guinness Book Of World Records.

MARLENE DIETRICH, 1901-1992

German-American actress Marlene Dietrich got her big break in 1929 when she played Lola Lola, a cabaret singer who causes the downfall of a schoolmaster in The Blue Angel (1930).

Her memorable roles in movies such as Blonde Venus and The Devil Is A Woman successfully turned her into the glamorous femme fatale.

KATHERINE HEIGL, 27

American actress Katherine Heigl, star of TV series Grey's Anatomy, favours wearing her blonde locks in upswept dos and showing off her curves in fitted gowns.

Seen here in an ivory gown with mermaid train by American designer Zac Posen, she won an Emmy this year for her role as Isobel Stevens on Grey's.

SCARLETT JOHANSSON, 22

American actress Scarlett Johansson never fails to look like she just stepped out of the 1930s - instead of a 21st-century limousine.

The actress also plays muse to fashion designers Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel and Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton.

Her ultimate Old Hollywood Glamour moment was last November at the premiere of The Prestige in this Grecian silk gown.
