Say it with metal

AND THEN there are those of us who love the different artistic shapes that can be hewn out of metal, and the various textures that can be coaxed out of silver and gold alone.

The good thing about metal-based jewellery pieces is how they can add a dash of understated flair to your look. Classics are precisely what they are, because they don't go out of fashion, and outlive trends long after a certain stone, colour, cut or mounting might look dated.

Here, we preview a clutch of metallic creations that will give that certain lift to your wardrobe and become evergreen additions in your jewellery portfolio. Warm yellows and glowing rose gold is in, with silver as a perennial.

Bottega Veneta launched its fine jewellery last year, consisting of hand-woven 18-karat gold chains. The woven theme appears to be strongly inspired by the brand's iconic bags. This year, earrings have been added to the collection, either in handwoven hoops or in large woven spheres. The sphere is inspired by the 'sfera', the ancient Venetian symbol of protection and luck. Rings are also available in a flat weave, or in spheres, pivoting like a globe on a vertical axis.

Bearing the unmistakable mark of their makers are Chopard's Chopardissimo rings, from $2,310.

Over at Georg Jensen, the Danish powerhouse of design has silver and gold jewellery also in basic geometric shapes. Its Cave collection sees spheres in necklaces, rings and earrings, in yellow gold, white gold and silver.

The Curve collection consists of a bangle, a ring, as well as earrings which have been crafted in sterling silver, with forms sculpturally reminiscent of the Nordic landscape and light. Silver encapsulates the Scandinavian colour of light, says its designer Regitze Overgaard.

The Pram brooch is a 1988 classic, designer Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hübe's interpretation of a snail. She also came up with Georg Jensen's Dew Drop collection in the 1950s, and that line has been updated this year with delicate, drop-shaped pendants (in rose quartz and black agate) which hang elegantly from a feminine sterling chain or neck-ring.

The original inspiration was from Viking craft, where large semi-precious stones were used as ornamentation on big silver jewellery pieces. The Dew Drop collection in gold is now available, while the silver arrives in March next year.

At Pomellato, the Duna ring is inspired by desert architecture, an ode to dunes which are shaped by nature. The contour is curved and feminine, with some unevenness adding to the appeal. The metal is matt rose gold with a smattering of brown diamonds. Another play on rose gold is Pomellato's Victoria chain, with rose gold and jet black links - fully handmade and hand-polished.

Geneva-based jewellery and watch house Chopard has also come up with the sleek and modern Chopardissimo collection for wearable, everyday jewellery. Double-set rings rotate round the finger, while earrings hoop easily on the ears, and the brand logo is featured on the rose and white gold all-polished jewellery.

If jewellery with logos is your thing, then there's also Cartier's 'Double C' ring with the jeweller's name engraved on it, which is this season's limited edition piece.
