Jungle fever

Designers from Jean Paul Gaultier for Hermes to Derek Lam have been hit by a bout of jungle fever.

» Bringing back a look first popularised by Yves Saint Laurent in the 1970s, going safari now does not mean just that boxy khaki jacket with a matching belt.

» Think animal prints and desert shades in feminine silhouettes too.

Dress, $265, vest, $175, pants, $165, and bracelets, $32.90 each, all from Massimo Dutti, 01-02 Liat Towers; wedges, $185, from Banana Republic, 02-04 Paragon Dress, $309, from Antipodean; knit hoodie, $169, and shorts, $99, both from Banana Republic; gold bracelet, $253, and bag, $490, both from Furla, 02-08 Raffles City Dress, $429, and skirt, $429, both from alldressedup; belt, $129, bracelet, $125, and leather wedges, $185, all from Banana Republic

The clothes

» Donning the full traditional safari suit makes you more lost explorer than Amazonian goddess. For a more sophisticated take, stylist Lionnel Lim suggests layering to create texture.

» The slick safari trench is best suited for those with slimmer silhouettes. Those of a bigger build should consider going for a safari- style top. Layering helps elongate the torso too.

» Khaki might be a versatile colour but too much of it and you'll look plain as mud. Instead, go for splashes of orange, ruby and coral to brighten up your look.

» Go tribal with your accessories. Something as simple as a large stone pendant or a feathered necklace is enough to bring out the jungle girl in you.

The make-up

» Make-up artist Yuan Sng suggests adding colour with the likes of tinted sunblock or moisturiser. The idea is to look sun-kissed.

» Those who want an edgier look can try a bronze cheek colour. But don't overdo it or you'll look like the Sphinx.

The hair

» To match the slick and clean modern-day safari look, hairstylist Evande Loh suggests pulling your hair into a neat, practical ponytail or French braid.

» Use mousse on dry hair to control frizz and add some shine to your hair. Hair spray can make your hair look too stiff.
