You've got the minimalist dress and the single stalk of violet hydrangeas. But what's a modern bride to do with her hair?

Some are going big on their big days. "Brides nowadays want really big hair," says Amanda Lee of bridal gown company Amanda Lee Weddings.

"Especially those wearing big gowns, so there's balance and they look proportionate," she says.

CLASSIC
Looking for a glamorous, formal look? A simple and versatile updo will have you looking like a queen.

How to wear it:
This updo suits a variety of gowns from simple, embroidered ones to elaborate, layered dresses. Chic and classy, it'll go perfectly in a formal setting like a church. Be sure to keep the hairdo updated with modern jewellery. Wearing a string of pearls may leave you looking a little dated so try injecting unusual pieces with a touch of personality, like gold pendants or precious stones.

ORIENTAL
The perfect do for modern brides keen to show off their heritage. While the hair is bunned up, it also falls in soft waves, creating a formal yet dreamy look.

How to wear it:
It's best paired with a cheongsam, so be sure not to over-accessorise with fussy jewellery. If you have an elaborate collar, skip the necklace completely and try simple earrings, hair adornments or flowers.

Brides with simpler gowns are choosing to stand out instead with a little bling - from classic hair pieces in crystal and tiaras to Oriental-style pieces.

Other sassy brides are injecting their own style and personality into their hairdos.

"A little hat with a mini veil adds a great twist to traditional hairstyles," says Caroline Yakop-Lim, a wedding planner with The Wedding Entourage.

Make-up artist and hairstylist T.G. Goh adds that finger waves are really big now too.

"So we're using that look but making the waves bigger and softer so that the bride doesn't look too hard," he says.

And don't forget colour.

Some brides are giving traditional, classy hairdos like simple buns a modern twist by using colour, says Yakop-Lim.

"Highlighting your hair gives it greater dimension and allows its texture to be seen more easily," she says.

But on top of the modern bride's list is comfort.

"Brides don't want to fight the heat and humidity so they're choosing to have their hair up when they're out in the open," says Goh.

"They're making smart choices."

SWEET
A simple and easy look, it's romantic and dreamy, perfect for a bride who's carefree and doesn't want a fussy do.

How to wear it:
If you're walking down a leafy aisle outdoors, this look's perfect for you. Wear it with a fancy and playful gown - with plenty of embroidery and details - to create a fairy-tale look. Pick jewellery in sweet and light colours. Try pink topaz and aquamarines, or - if you like a little more shine - diamonds.

DRAMATIC
Looking to make a grand entrance? Big hair set high will be sure to grab everyone's attention.

How to wear it:
Pick this look only if you've got an equally grand gown. A simple gown will leave you looking unbalanced. Keep your jewellery simple. Earrings should be small and let your neckline dictate your choice of necklace.
